National Accounts, period of reference 2012

The Banco Central de Costa Rica, acknowledging that the country’s economic reality has changed in the last decades, and in keeping with its responsibility to calculate and publicize economic statistics, makes available to national authorities and to the public at large the preliminary results of the National Accounts - period of reference 2012. The new accounts include 183 products and 136 activities, and update the base of the country’s productive structure, from the base year 1991 to a reference period of 2012.

The methodological framework for the change is the 2008 National Accounts System (SCN08), which facilitates preparation and presentation of data in a format oriented towards economic analysis, decision making, and the formulation of economic policy. The SCN08 is consistent with the most recent international standards.

The principal statistical arrangements that make up the central national accounts framework, as well as presentations and documents describing the principal methodological changes, are presented in this site. The results include:

• Supply and Use Table (SUT): provides information on global supply (production and imports of goods and services), reconciled with use according to destinations (final consumption, intermediate consumption, change in inventory, gross fixed capital formation, and exports).

• Integrated Economic Accounts (IEA): offer a general outlook on the economy from the perspective of institutional sectors, the total economy, and the rest of the world.

• Cross Classification by Industry and Industrial Sector (CCIS): uses data from the SUT, combining them with the results of the IEA.

• Employment matrix: this is a statistical instrument that helps determine economic consistency between the level of production of economic activities, and the amount of employment required to carry them out.

• Input-Output matrix (I-O): details on supply and use of goods and services in the economy, and income and employment generated by different economic activities, for a certain period. This is a source of analytical information on a country’s productive relationships (Publication Feb. 02, 2016).

The Banco Central thanks all businesses, public and private institutions, independent producers, researchers and specialists who have contributed through the provision of data or expertise, making it possible to complete this publication successfully.
