On August 31, 2023, Costa Rica commemorated the 175th anniversary of the Founding of the Republic. On that day in 1848, Dr. José María Castro Madriz signed the decree proclaiming the country as a sovereign, free, and independent republic, thus separated from the Central American Federation, after which he became the first president of the nation. The 175th anniversary celebration reaffirmed the country’s historic commitment to democracy and freedom.
Following the foundation, the national symbols (flag and coat of arms) were formally recognized, education was promoted, and international diplomatic relations were established.
Symbols: They reflect the national institutional framework, the respect for the rule of law, and the national identity, thus highlighting the importance of the republic as a form of government based on citizen participation and the common wealth-being. Altogether, the image conveys pride in national history and Costa Rica’s commitment to democracy, peace, and political stability.
